CHAPTER 6
Kat
âSo thatâs how we use this mixer. Iâm sure youâve got something similar in that bakery you used to work at.â
Nodding my head, I smile at the little baker. Sheâs such a sweet person that I canât stay mad even if I want to. Not to mention Iâm not mad at her. I am hella pissed at fate right now. If my father hadnât gotten sick and needed some looking after, Iâd still be in my home and not thousands of miles away, reliving some old memories and wishing I didnât fuck things up the first time around.
âSeems simple enough.â
âDo you want to come in and open with me in the morning?â
âSure,â I shrug my shoulders. âI should get used to how things run before I start trying to work some new things in.â
âYou can work some new stuff in if you want to. I just thought it might be nice if we worked together a few times before we started adding hours and catering services.â
âThat sounds good. The catering services that youâre talking about are the dessert table kinds, right?â
âYes, I donât think either one of us really wants to do full meals.â
âNope. I am strictly a pastry chef.â
âGood. Then weâre on the same page.â
âYes. We are.â
She clears her throat. âSoâ¦umm. Have you had a chance to look around yet?â
âYes, I have. It doesnât seem like itâs changed very much.â
âNot really. Still have the old drive-in outside of town that only shows movies on Friday and Saturday nights. Still have the diner and the one nice restaurant just outside of town. And then thereâs the library. The police station and courthouse in the oldest municipal building left known to man. You know.â
âI do know.â I grin and sit down at the counter where weâve wandered to while she gets us a couple of cups of coffee and a strange donut like Iâve never seen before.â
I pick it up and stare at it for a minute. âWhat the heck kind of donut is this?â
She giggles. âYouâve never seen a donut and cookie mix?â
âNo.â And Iâm not really sure that I wanted to. But Cassidyâs eyes light up. Iâve perfected this really cool way to combine a strawberry donut and a chocolate cookie into this one dessert that is luscious.â
I nod. âThat does sound good.â
âHere. Try one.â
I take it and eye it skeptically. âBottoms up?â She says and my eyes glaze over with the first bite. Itâs a strange mix of strawberry cake and chocolate cookie and itâs so delicious that I almost hunt up the batter and lick out the bowl.
âYou canât make too many of these or Iâm going to weigh about three hundred pounds.â
I chuckle and look up at her. âGet used to it. I think youâre gonna be something big around here. Just you wait.â
Laughing lightly, I toss my hair back and take a bite of the pastry, moaning around the mouthful.
âI donât know about that. You seem like you have a pretty good following and this thing is worth its weight in gold.
